BREASTFEEDING CLASSES
Baton Rouge class: August 18th, 9 AM - 12 PM
Ponchatoula class: October 2nd, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Breastfeeding is nature's most powerful way of helping mothers recover from birth, learn mothering skills, and fall in love with their babies. It's also nature's way of ensuring that babies are well nourished, protected against disease, and allowed to develop optimally. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed (no water, juice, formula, other fluids, or solids) for six months and continue breastfeeding until at least one year.

In this class we will cover:
  • Benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby
  • The anatomy of the breast
  • Colostrum
  • Foremilk vs hindmilk
  • Getting a proper latch
  • Comfortable breastfeeding positions
  • How to tell if baby is getting enough
  • Recognizing feeding cues
  • Growth spurts and cluster feedings
  • Breast health - mastitis, plugged
    ducts, engorgment
  • Breastfeeding after breast reduction
    surgeries or with implants
  • Breastfeeding after Ceasarean section

We will also discuss issues such as finding the right nursing bra, nutrition during breastfeeding, breastfeeding while pregnant, extended breastfeeding, tandem nursing, and LAM and contraception.

This class is taught by Tera Smith, a skilled Breastfeeding Support Counselor and LLL Leader. She provides clear & accurate breastfeeding information for the "soon-to-be" new mother.
